Reflecting on the books of 2012, I thought I’d list a few of my favorites. Of course, I didn’t read everything released, so I know there are good titles not included here, but these are some of my favorites of last year.
Favorite Autobiography: Satan is Real: The Ballad of the Louvin Brothers by Charlie Louvin and Benjamin Whitmer.
Easily my favorite autobio of the year. Whitmer captures Louvin’s voice perfectly and just in time as Louvin unfortunately succumbed to cancer just as the book was going to press. This also wins out as my favorite book design of the year, bringing to mind the old Hardy Boys books of my youth.
2nd Favorite: Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock & Roll by Ann & Nancy Wilson with Charles Cross
Favorite Biography: Dwight Yoakam: A Thousand Miles From Nowhere by Don McLeese
One of my favorite artists finally gets the book treatment and it was worth the wait. McLeese does an excellent job with this “critical biography” that kicks off the American Music Series from University of Texas Press.
2nd Favorite: TIE – The One: The Life and Music of James Brown by RJ Smith and Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown by David Menconi
Favorite Digital Only Release: One Way Out: An Oral History of the Allman Brothers Band by Alan Paul
Drawing on interviews conducted with the band over several years, Paul constructs a fantastic look at the band supplemented by his take on nearly 50 Allman Brothers Band, or related, albums.
2nd Favorite: All I Need to Know I Learned from KISS: Life Lessons from the Hottest Band in the Land by Chris Epting
Favorite Oversized Book: 360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story by Sean Wilentz
Loaded with both an informative narrative of one of the most powerful record labels of all time and with numerous fantastic pictures, this book deserves a spot – a big one – in everyone’s collection.
2nd Favorite: The Fender Telecaster: The Life and Times of the Electric Guitar That Changed the World by Dave Hunter
Favorite Paperback Release: The Chitlin’ Circuit: And the Road to Rock ‘n’ Roll by Preston Lauterbach
This is when I miss a book and then discover it when it is released in paperback. This year, that was Chitlin’ Circuit by Preston Lauterbach. This was actually my favorite read of the year. Lauterbach put together a great story that was filled with twists and turns and great information along the way.
2nd Favorite: Is This the Real Life?: The Untold Story of Queen by Mark Blake.
Here’s to 2013!
